Welcome to Hats and Horses

Welcome to Hats and Horses! My name is Sally Faith Steinmann and I am the owner and designer of MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Custom Millinery for Women. I create fancy ladies’ hats for all sorts of special occasions including the Kentucky Derby, Royal Ascot, weddings, teas and garden parties.CorinneDer161-001B

My very earliest childhood passion was horses, but I never had one of my own. When I became a hat maker years later, many of my customers were women who attended the Kentucky Derby or the Royal Ascot races. In a wondrous yet totally unexpected trajectory, my hats were leading me full circle right back around to the horses I’d so loved as a little girl!

In recent years I discovered a way to blend my love for RapidReduxHat1for hats and horses by creating and donating Derby hats to raise funds for retired racehorses around the country. As a result I now sponsor an exclusive six month online Derby hat auction fundraiser, “Hats Off to the Horses”, with Old Friends of Kentucky to benefit their retired racehorses.

Yet the adventure for me with hats and horses has only just begun. Through this blog, I hope to share my experiences as they happen. I hope that you will join me in the adventure as it unfolds. I look forward to your feedback and comments, and I hope to hear some of your own personal stories about hats and horses and what they mean to you.

Thank you for visiting, and I hope to be posting something again for you very soon!

    1. Hi Caitlin! Thank you so much for your kind words about my hat designs. I love that scene from Pretty Woman, too, and I try to create hats that make women feel good when they are wearing them. Congratulations on your work that you do, I think it’s terrific! When you read my first “real post” coming up soon, you’ll see just what a hopelessly horse-crazy milliner I truly am! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Crystal, your caring words echo my own sentiments about the horses. The many ways we can journey with these wondrous fellow beings in our lives are endless. And up to each of us to explore and discover in our own way, if we so choose. I can’t wait to hear more news of your sweet Sylvie, and to know when she has arrived in Brewster – you must be SO excited! 🙂

  2. Sally, I truly enjoyed reading your blog especially when it brought back memories of the exact same rocking horse I as child did receive for Christmas. I was very young–too young to recall that particular Christmas–but when I look at pictures of that rocking horse under the Christmas tree and pictures of me “riding,” I do feel a faint memory stir. Thanks so much for sharing and look forward to more.

    1. Wow Rebecca, you and I always seem to be on the same pathway or something, how AMAZING that you yourself had received this very same horse for a Christmas long ago! I hope you’ll visit again, I think you can sign up for receiving email notices about new posts (right side bar on the blog page). This little story is, I hope, just the beginning… 🙂
