Every year I create new hats for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, a 2-day year-end American Thoroughbred horse racing event that attracts equine athletes from all over the world. For the second year in a row it will be held at the historic Santa Anita racetrack in California. As always I eagerly awaited the unveiling of the Breeders’ Cup 2013 logo and I was thrilled to see the traditional palette featuring purple in the logo, one of my very favorite colors!
I have always loved the color purple. Living on the color wheel between red and blue, the many variations in purple have names almost as delicious as the colors themselves: magenta, fuchsia, plum, mulberry, Byzantium, heliotrope, orchid, aubergine, fandango and wisteria!
To celebrate the Breeders’ Cup and all things purple, I am debuting three new Chelsea hats and two new Juliettes in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Hat Collection at Maggie Mae Designs®.
The Chelsea Der60-034 is a medium sized hat style. Fashioned in a deep, rich plummy purple dupioni silk, Chelsea is trimmed with two large sumptuous peonies created out of swirling layers of purple/plum taffeta and organza nestled on a bed of purple taffeta leaves.
The Chelsea Der60-033, fashioned out of brassy gold dupioni silk, is trimmed with a single purple shantung rose curl framed with a medley of purple and plum taffeta leaves and accented with matching buttons and mocha veiling.
Finally, the Chelsea Der60-032 design, a monochromatic feast of plum dupioni silk, is trimmed with roses, buttons and bows!
For those who prefer the look of a smaller hat design, I am offering two new fascinators. The first is the Juliette Der54-007 in chartreuse dupioni silk, trimmed with a matching rose curl and accented with purple/plum leaves, poofy tulle freeform bows and matching braiding.
Last but never least, the Juliette Der54-008 makes her Breeders’ Cup debut in deep plum/purple dupioni silk adorned with a single large plum organza rose, matching taffeta leaves, twinkling buttons and gold/linden green braiding and ribbons.

And I dare you not to be captivated with purple this season.
