Welcome to A Derby Hat Countdown featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
As a custom ladies’ milliner who has specialized in Derby hats for more than 15 years, I thought it might be fun to celebrate the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands with a very special and unique Derby Hat Countdown. And as we all know, On Derby Day it’s all about the HAT!
The Derby falls on May 3rd this year and we are just 101 days away from what many call “the most exciting two minutes in sports.”
For the next 101 days I’ll be showcasing one selected hat each day from my Derby Hat Collection. Each featured hat will have a brief introduction and a link to its own webpage where you can see it from all the different angles and read about the materials that were used to fashion it.
Whether you are attending this year’s Run for the Roses and searching for the perfect hat to wear or simply passionate about fancy hats and the Derby as harbingers of spring, I hope to satisfy your passion for fabulous Derby chapeaux one day and one hat at a time!
And now we present our first hat in the Derby Hat Countdown… the “Sedona”!
This gorgeous silk Derby hat was inspired last Derby season by Pam Corrigan of Kingsport, Tennessee. Pam wanted an extra wide chapeau for her Derby adventure, full of drama, in the colors of the smaller brimmed Mykele’s Cinco de Mayo Derby design with some added bling. We worked together and came up with this amazing wide brim style that incorporates luxurious dupioni silk, satin, tulle and organza. The result? Pure confection. And for an added bit of sparkle, multi-colored Swarovsky crystals accent the brim edge, fit for a Princess!
The “Sedona” design can be viewed in all her glory on the Sedona hat webpage that was created to show the hat from many different angles.
As we approach Derby Day I invite you to keep checking my Derby Hat Collection at the MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® website. This year we are offering four unique Derby salons with hats arranged according to size: extra wide brims, wide brims, medium brims and small brims/fascinators. New hats will be created and added throughout the season, so keep stopping by to see what’s new!
And please remember that if you are attending the Derby don’t forget to get your Derby hat shopping started early. Custom designs can be time intensive and those rush charges can really add up as we get closer to Derby Day week!
