MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 82 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Our hat for today is the “Kim” wide brim chapeau that is found in Salon 2 of the Derby Hat Collection at

I have a passion for custom millinery and I am over the moon when someone approaches me with an idea for a new custom hat design. Last Derby season a wonderful woman named Kim asked if I could create a wide brim Derby chapeau that would combine the dimensions of my “Katie” Derby hat style…

With the trimmings of the “Candy” Derby hat style…

Kim knew that she wanted the hat to be in white with charcoal, black and hot pink trims along with silk organza “feathers.”  Then, for the finishing touch, she desired a bit of BLING!

I created the nearly 22-inch Katie size hat foundation in white dupioni silk. To capture the spirit of the Candy trims, I then fashioned a large Marguerite in alternating black and charcoal silk organza with a hot pink organza and shantung center. Yards of black, charcoal and soft gray tulle were layered and run around the crown ’til they were gathered in the back of the hat.

The final accents were the black and charcoal silk organza “feathers” set behind the Marguerite so they spilled over the brim edge like a cascading waterfall. For the final touch I added Kim’s BLING: a medley of sparkle buttons in the hot pink rose curl center. Kim’s dream of her custom Derby design was now a reality, ready for mint Juleps and the call to the post on Derby Day!
