The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #66, the “Marmee” wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 2 at maggiemae.com.
I originally named my business after a tiger kitty named Maggie Mae. She was my muse from the moment I started my hat business.
When Maggie passed, a lovable orange and white feline named Marmee entered our lives.
It took her a while to settle in with us. But once she did, she blossomed; each day was a joy to watch her taking new steps in trusting us.
Early on, Marmee inspired a brand new hat, the “Marmee” chapeau, offered now in my Derby Hat Collection. How could anyone not be inspired by those soft amber-green eyes and gorgeous fur coat?
I created the foundation for the hat in white dupioni silk for the marshmallow white of Marmee’s coat. I added a ruffled brim edge in marmalade orange and soft yellow organza with wisps of tulle between the layers.
I trimmed the crown with a deep orange satin sash.
I fashioned one large orange satin and organza layered camellia and three smaller orange and yellow organza peonies with dark orange satin centers.
I sculpted leaves to frame the flowers out of embroidered and solid lime green organza and nestled them around the crown. This hat will always remind me of the dearest, most connecting creature who continues to blossom right before our eyes.
