The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #65, the “Liza” wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at maggiemae.com.
This Liza was one of my first Derby Collection hat designs. A fan favorite every season, she has a classic look of elegance and style, and she matches almost everything which makes her versatile as well as stunning!
To celebrate the 140th Kentucky Derby I wanted to give this special Liza a makeover, adding a bit more detailing to the original trim design.
I created the foundation out of black dupioni silk and set it to the side to begin the trims. I then created a single black silk organza rose curl with a black button center that I framed with black French ribbons and a bit of black veiling which I also set to the side.
I then took ivory satin and created a simple pleated sash and a lavish double bow. I stitched the rose curl and ribbons into the center of the bow and added the entire bow trim to the hat foundation so it spilled over the brim edge.
Finally I added three black buttons to the back of the hat to give the design one last touch of elegance. The new-and-improved Liza of the Black Silk Rose was ready for her debut at the Derby and beyond!
