The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #64, “Cheryl’s Michaela”, a wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 2 at maggiemae.com.
A lady named Cheryl contacted me regarding a custom Derby hat design. She said she really loved the “Michaela” extra wide brim hat in black silk with hot pink trims.
The dress Cheryl found for the Derby was black. She decided she would like the Michaela in black silk with red accents in place of the original hot pink trims.
I created the nearly 22-inch Michaela hat foundation in black dupioni silk. I fashioned a single large rose curl in alternating layers of deep red taffeta and black silk organza and adorned it with a large black pebble button.
I trimmed the crown of the hat with a red taffeta sash and double bow that had been lined with black silk organza. And for the Michaela’s signature trim element I created the long slender “feathers” in black silk organza and laid them across the brim to extend over the brim edge.
The final design measured approximately 28 inches, end to end. I love Cheryl’s custom vision for the Michaela just as much as the original, and the bright red rose makes her just perfect for the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs!
