The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #61, “Kathleen Der4-002”, a small brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.
Years ago I created the “Kathleen” in leopard fleece and dupioni silk for a new holiday hat collection called “The Leopard Hat Collection”. Inspired by my tiger kitty named Maggie Mae, the Collection featured an assortment of many different hat styles for fancy teas and holiday parties.
When Spring came around I decided that I would create the Kathleen hat style in elegant silk fabrics and colors suitable for the Kentucky Derby and other horse racing events.
I fashioned a “Kathleen” style hat in silver dupioni silk and trimmed it with a slate gray taffeta sash with a double bow set in the very back of the hat.
For the center of the bow I created a single large rose curl out of alternating layers of silk organza and taffeta.
Finally I took silver and gray tulle which I gathered into small “poofs” under the bow, letting long tails of glistening tulle spill down the back of the hat. Like some of my “top hat” Derby designs, the Kathleen is decidedly “equestrian” in spirit, perfect for a trip to Churchill Downs for a grand weekend of horse racing!
