The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Last year a lady named Susan contacted me regarding a custom wide brim Derby hat design. Susan loved the “Stefanie” Bridal hat for its simple elegance but she had a vision for “earth tone” colors and trims that would make the hat truly her own.

I created the nearly 21-inch Stefanie hat foundation in a deep garnet red dupioni silk. I then rolled alternating layers of red taffeta and red crinkle organza to create a single large rose curl. A medley of chocolate and sage organza leaves were added next along with a chocolate satin sash and a splash of chocolate veiling.

For the final touch, a tiny chocolate button was added to the back of the hat. Susan’s dream of a Derby chapeau that combined her favorite colors with stylish wide brim elegance had come true!
