I love wide brim Derby hats; I also love the color red. Several years ago I was asked to create the widest red silk wide brim hat that would still fit through the gates at Churchill Downs. Up until that time, an 18-inch brim had been my widest Derby hat design. I took on the challenge with a relish.

I began with a hat foundation created in scarlet red dupioni silk, fashioning the silk into a nearly 22-inch brim size.

I created the sash out of red satin with an enormous bow and long tails that spilled down the back of the hat. For the center of the bow, I created three medium roses out of layered red chiffon and dupioni silk, adding red beading and red silk organza “feathers” for a touch of bling.

The finished design measured nearly 23 inches end to end, full of vibrant monochromatic color and textured drama for a stunning entrance at Churchill Downs!
