The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #48, the “Liza”, a wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at maggiemae.com.
Living on Cape Cod near the ocean and the marshes may explain my love for blues and greens. I also love polka dots. Last Derby season I decided to combine these favorites into a wide brim chapeau!
I began with a luscious white dupioni silk and created a hat base that measured nearly 18″ across. For the trim I envisioned a lavish bow with a floral centerpiece. To satisfy my passion for polka dots, I fashioned a large blue and white polka dot-lined navy satin double bow with a matching sash. For the center of the bow, I created a single rose curl out of alternating layers of white silk organza and blue satin, framing it with a medley of mixed green taffeta leaves.
Inspired by the ocean, I swirled layers of deep blue tulle around the crown, letting the filmy fabric spill over the brim like the edges of waves in the sunlight.
My polka dot Liza by the Sea was ready to be transported to Louisville for an adventure of racing, sipping mint juleps to the strains of “My Old Kentucky Home!”
