The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #47, the “Shirley”, a medium brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.
I love polka dots. Whether they are little dots, big dots or medium dots, they make me smile. Several years ago I decided to combine my beloved polka dots with the traditional red roses of the Kentucky Derby.
I began with a medium hat base created out of a mix of black and white polka dot fabric and dupioni silk. For something truly different and playful, I added a saucy polka dot “skirt” lined with silk, gathered just so to create the softest wave in the fabric.
For the trim I found a simple red silk rose and fashioned a medley of leaves out of black silk organza to frame it.
I created a black taffeta sash for around the crown, and added a black button to the back seam. Shirley was now ready to make her Derby entrance!
My polka dot Shirley, adorned with a single red rose, has been a fan favorite ever since not only for the Derby but for Royal Ascot, tea parties and weddings, too!
