One of my favorite characters in the movie “Titanic” is Molly Brown. Bold, outspoken and never daunted, that’s Molly to a T. Several years ago I created a hat to honor this gutsy female character who also inspired the musical, The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

I began by creating an 18-inch wide hat foundation out of a white dupioni silk. I then fashioned an enormous lavish bow for the hat out of black and white striped satin. Into the center of the bow I nestled a large rose curl which I created out of red taffeta.

Next I layered yards and yards of black and white tulle, gathering it in the back of the hat to form tulle “poofs” that resemble the bustle of a woman’s dress.

As I stood back and looked at my new creation I couldn’t help feeling that any woman would feel unsinkable in this stunning wide brim wonder. Whether it’s at the Derby, Royal Ascot or a grand ball, all heads will turn as you make your entrance wearing the ever-buoyant “Molly” chapeau!  She’s an unsinkable choice!
