MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® – Derby Hat Countdown – 29 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #29, the “Annabelle”, a medium brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at

We’re just 4 weeks away from Ladies’ Day at Churchill Downs and the running of the 140th Kentucky Oaks! And to celebrate I’d like to share a very special chapeau with you named “Annabelle”.

The original Annabelle

Annabelle has been a cherished standard in my collection of Derby hats at MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® for years. Always a popular choice for both the Oaks as well as for fancy teas, over the years Annabelle’s trims changed a bit as she “matured”. This year I decided that I would give Annabelle a very special makeover and photo shoot.

I began by creating the hat foundation in burnt rose linen with a hot pink linen underbrim.

I fashioned a rose curl out of fuchsia dupioni silk and framed it with fuchsia silk leaves lined with white silk.

A matching silk sash was carefully stitched and set around the crown of the hat.

For one final touch of elegance I added a hot pink button to the back seam.

When I stood back and looked at our new and improved “Annabelle, I knew that she was ready for her debut at the Kentucky Oaks and many more fancy teas to come!
