The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®! Today we are featuring Hat #28, the “Tara”, a wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 2 at maggiemae.com. To celebrate being just 4 weeks out from the Derby I am sharing with you a very special Lady in Red, the Tara, inspired by the traditional red roses of the Kentucky Derby and one of my favorite movie characters, Scarlett O’ Hara. I began with a wide brim hat foundation in a deep red dupioni silk. The hat measured nearly 22 across and I decided to fold the brim up in the front and the back to give it lots of attitude in keeping with our Gone with the Wind heroine. Next I fashioned a huge poofy double bow out of black dupioni silk, lined it with red satin and laid it across the front brim so that it spilled over the brim edges. A matching silk sash was created to encircle the crown and three red buttons stitched as an accent for the back of the hat. As I stood back to look at this grand, sophisticated chapeau I imagined Scarlett O’Hara looking out over her beloved Tara. And on Derby Day as you gaze out from your seat on Millionaire’s Row, peeking out from under Tara’s sweeping, curvaceous brim, you too will be the queen of all that you survey!
