The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #27, the “Mary”, a cloche style Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 4 at maggiemae.com.
Thanks to Downton Abbey, the popular British television series on Masterpiece, the cloche has once again become a favorite for fancy teas and weddings as well as the Kentucky Derby. Typically fashioned out of linen or cotton for casual wear, I wanted to create a cloche out of fine silk in a design worthy of a debut at Churchill Downs or even the Queen’s Garden Party.
The result was a Barbara style with medium brim in a rich freesia yellow linen.
I fashioned rose curl trim out of alternating layers of yellow satin and organza rose curl and framed it with a medley of lime green embroidered organza and taffeta leaves.
For a final touch I added a soft lemon button to the back of the hat. Our “Mary” Derby cloche is ready for her debut at the Run for the Roses!
