The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #25, the “Rita”, a wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.
Rita is named for one of my favorite stars of the silver screen. She began with 15-inch wide base fashioned out of a rich and bold red dupioni silk.
For the trim centerpiece I created a “pinwheel” fleur out of alternating burgundy and red taffeta leaves with a black silk organza rose curl for the center. I added black veiling behind the fleur to soften the look and add a bit of wistfulness to the design.
I gathered shimmering black tulle around the crown, layered a black satin sash and hand stitched a black button to the back seam.
Lovely Rita! As bedazzling as her namesake, this stunning medium brimmed Derby hat design is sure to set your toes to tapping and your heart to singing at Churchill Downs on that first Saturday in May!
