MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 24 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #24, the “Liza Der13-091”, a wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at

The Liza Derby hat is so wearable! She has many different “looks” all depending upon her trims and fabrics. Several years ago I started creating “Marguerite” fleurs to trim my Liza hats. Created out of organza petals with rose curl centers, the flowers remind me of daisies dancing in the sunlight.

This year I wanted to offer a Liza featuring lemon organza Marguerites on a rich white dupioni silk hat base.

For the trim centerpiece I created a Marguerite fleur with shimmering lemon organza petals and a black silk organza rose curl center.  Black taffeta leaves framed the fleur and a sparkling black pebble button in the rose curl provided an exquisite accent.

I created a black taffeta sash to circle the crown and then gathered yards of matte lemon tulle to layer around and over the brim. The result was a confectionary delight of luscious lemon!

Standing back I was pleased with the new Liza. She had a look that was both bold and soft, elegant yet playful. This was a happy hat, full of sunlight and ready for the Derby, a garden party or a fancy tea!
