MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 20 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #20, the “Kathleen”, a medium brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at

A couple of years ago I created a Kathleen style chapeau to celebrate the World Equestrian Games when they came to Kentucky.

Thanks to the British television series, Downton Abbey, cloches and flapper style hats have made a comeback for equine sporting events including the Kentucky Derby. This year I decided it was high time for a new Kathleen design trimmed with my beloved POLKA DOTS!

I began with a silver dupioni silk hat foundation…

I then added a jumbo rose curl fashioned out of alternating layers of silver and black silk organza, loosely rolled to create a sprawling, open rose effect.

Next came a medley of black satin and silk organza leaves.  I then gathered black veiling into free form “bow loops” to create a nest for the rose.

For the finishing touch I created a wide sash out of a black and white polka dot chiffon and layered it around the crown. The hat was stunning from every angle and loaded with polka dot magic, Downton Abbey style. Kathleen was ready for Churchill Downs and the Run for the Roses!
