The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #19, the “Darby”, a Derby cocktail hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 4 at maggiemae.com.
Fascinators and cocktail hats have been making a splash at Churchill Downs for the past several years. A long-time tradition at Royal Ascot, fascinators are now considered by some to be as much a part of Derby tradition as the classic wide brims.
One of my favorite color combinations is red and yellow, and for this year’s Derby I wanted to create a brand new cocktail design that incorporated these colors with lots of texture and plenty of pizzazz!
I started with a basic cocktail hat foundation created out of freesia dupioni silk. I fashioned three small rose curls in red silk, clustered them together and set them on the top of the hat.
I then handcrafted long, ruched red silk organza “tails” and attached them beneath the rose curls, letting them cascade over the edge of the hat like a waterfall. For the finishing touches I added several red silk organza “feathers” to the top of the hat and red veiling across the front.
The new “Darby” hat was everything I had dreamed about and more. Her debut at the Run for the Roses was sure to be a grand adventure with everyone buzzing about her bold colors, fascinating textures – and undeniable pizzazz!
