MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 18 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #18, the “Angelica”, a wide brimDerby hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at

Years ago I developed an innovative new trim: silk organza “feathers”. I love watching birds and I created these feather-shaped trims in silk organza out of respect to these beautiful winged creatures. This year I wanted to create a scallop-edge brim style that would showcase this feathery trim in a new way.

I started with a hat foundation created out of ivory dupioni silk, shaping the brim edges with a rolling scallop curve.

Next I fashioned a single black silk organza rose curl with a matching organza triple bow and arranged it right in the center of the front of the hat.

I then handcrafted long black silk organza “feathers”, shaping them until they danced.

For the finishing touches I fashioned a sash in soft black satin for around the crown with a single black button to accent the back seam.

I named the new hat “Angelica” hat for one of my favorite actresses. I can just picture our be-feathered “Angelica” making her grand entrance at Churchill Downs and then winging her way to Royal Ascot and the Dubai World Cup next year!
