MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 16 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #16, the “Kelli’s Sallita”, a medium brim hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at

Last Derby season a woman named Kelli asked me if I could recreate one of my Derby Collection “Sallita” hats in different colors and fabrics. Kelli told me she loved the 1920’s look of the Sallita and that she wanted the hat to be pink for the Kentucky Oaks Day celebrations at Churchill Downs. I loved the idea and got started on her hat.

Blog-SallitaDer6-036A-2I began with a hat foundation created out of a fuchsia dupioni silk with a classic Sallita brim style.

I fashioned a single rose curl out of swirling hot pink organza and satin, framed it with a medley of spring green taffeta and organza leaves and added a touch of bright pink veiling in a free form bow behind the entire trim centerpiece.

I then took hot pink shantung and fashioned a sash to encircle the crown, adding a hot pink button to the back of the hat for a final accent.

Kelli called to tell me how much she loved her new Sallita design for the Oaks. And the “Kelli’s Sallita” is ready this year for the 140th running of the Kentucky Oaks and Pink Out Day at Churchill Downs!
