The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #12, the Heather Der94-001 hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at maggiemae.com.
Years ago I began creating silk organza feathers as trim for my hats. I love watching birds and I created these feather-shaped trims in silk organza out of respect to these beautiful winged creatures.
About at the same time I developed my new trims a lady approached me to design a hat for a fancy tea party. She said that she wanted a bold new “look” and something that no one else at the party would be wearing. It was the perfect opportunity to showcase my new feathers.
I decided to begin with an asymmetrical hat foundation created out of white dupioni silk. For added drama and attitude I shaped the brim into an upturned fold…
I placed a large bow I had made out of black and white dupioni silk onto the hat and then added a Marguerite fleur, created out of black and white silk organza for the petals with a black button for the center.
Finally it was time for some feathery magic. I fashioned five black silk organza fathers in varying widths and lengths and stitched them beneath the bow centerpiece, shaping them to frame the face.
The new be-feathered chapeau was finished and ready for her debut. We named her the “Heather” and she was a hit at the tea party with her “feathers” being the talk of the town!
I have recreated the “Heather” style many times since then in a variety of colors and textures. She has become a fan favorite for Royal Ascot, weddings and the Kentucky Derby.
