MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 9 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #9, the Chelsea Der60-027 hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at

I love the “Chelsea” hat style. Created as a little sister to the “Liza” chapeau, the Chelsea brim measures approximately 16 inches across and frames the wearer’s face beautifully.

On a recent fabric search I found an amazing print that I was eager to use for a new Chelsea Derby hat style. I loved the color combination of lime green and periwinkle, and the swirling loop pattern reminded me of the famed mint juleps that are a Derby tradition every first Saturday in May.

I began with a classic Chelsea foundation that I fashioned out of the new fabric paired with a scrumptious periwinkle dupioni silk for the underbrim.

For the centerpiece I fashioned a large, delicate rose curl out of periwinkle organza.

I framed the flower with periwinkle dupioni silk leaves and a matching sash.

For the finishing touch I added a lavender button to the back of the hat which provided added elegance and balance to the entire design.

Blog-ChelseaDer60-027H Our new Chelsea is ready for the party to begin as Churchill Downs prepares to welcome the world to the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. Mint julep anyone?
