MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 6 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #6, the Nicole Der81-005 hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at

Recently I decided to create a new Nicole style incorporating one of my very favorite colors, PURPLE!  My original Nicole with a black base has been a popular Derby and wedding design, but the thought of mixing purple into the design was intriguing.

I began with Nicole’s black dupioni silk foundation and then added a purple taffeta underbrim. In the classic Nicole hat style, I overlaid the brim with a tutu-like  “skirt” created from shimmering black tulle.

Blog-NicoleDer81-005CI trimmed the hat with three medium rose curls fashioned out of purple chiffon and silk organza and framed them with sage green metallic taffeta leaves.

I then took purple taffeta and created a folded sash that I circled around the crown.

For the finishing touch I added a purple button to the back of the hat.

I still love the original Nicole hat design, but I think her purple-trimmed sister will become a new fan favorite for the Triple Crown races as well as Royal Ascot and fancy tea parties!
