MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Launches Second Annual Derby Hat Countdown

Welcome to the Second Annual Derby Hat Countdown featuring 101 Derby hats by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®! Because our Countdown was so well received last year, we are running it again and adding a few surprises.

Blog-SallyH-2014DerbyHat1The Derby falls on May 2nd this year and we are just 101 days away from what many call “the most exciting two minutes in sports”. To mark those 101 days I’ll be showcasing one selected hat each day from my Derby Hat Collection. Each featured hat will have a brief introduction and a link to its own webpage where you can see it from all the different angles and read about what inspired its creation and the materials that were used to fashion it.

Whether you are attending this year’s Run for the Roses and searching for the perfect hat to wear or simply love fancy hats, I hope to satisfy your passion one day and one hat at a time!

And now we present our first hat in the Derby Hat Countdown… the “Hanalee”!

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-101HatsThis gorgeous silk Derby hat was inspired by Sally Hamlin, a dedicated  horsewoman. Sally is a physical scientist from Washington, DC specializing in air quality and the proud owner of a 9-year-old off track Thoroughbred named Make Me King (“King”). She also has a jewelry business, SHE Jewelry Designs, which features jewelry designed to celebrate the OTTB (off the track Thoroughbred). All proceeds from her jewelry sales go to Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Montpelier.

Blog-SallyH-and-King-at-october2013showLast year Sally requested a custom hat design for her Derby adventure that would be elegant and most important of all, “comfortable and no fuss”.

After going through my Derby Hat Collection, she told me she liked the “Marcelle”, the “Chelsea” and the “Marmee”.

She also loved the trim elements and style of the “Hidden Lake” chapeau that I had created several years ago for our “Hats Off to the Horses” Derby hat fundraiser for Old Friends.

Sally found the perfect coral print Derby dress and soon sketches for a hat in a coral/gray/black combination were underway. We worked together and came up with an amazing style that incorporated sumptuous black dupioni silk, silver silk organza, wispy tulle and coral shantung; very stylish and totally comfortable for the races!

New hats will be created and added throughout the season, so keep stopping by to see what’s new!
