MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 96 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #96, the “Angelica”, a wide brim Derby hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-96HatsYears ago I developed an innovative new trim: silk organza “feathers”.  I so enjoy  our beautiful winged creatures and the feathers were created out of respect for them. This year I wanted to create a scallop-edge brim style that would showcase this feathery trim in a new way.

I started with a hat foundation created out of ivory dupioni silk, shaping the brim edges with a rolling scallop curve.

Blog-AngelicaDer207-001E-CropNext I fashioned a single black silk organza rose curl with a matching organza triple bow and arranged it in the center of the front of the hat.

Blog-AngelicaDer207-001A-cropI then handcrafted long black silk organza “feathers”, shaping them until they danced.

Blog-AngelicaDer207-001AI encircled the crown with a soft black satin sash and, as a finishing touch, added a black button to the back.
Blog-AngelicaDer207-001II named the new hat “Angelica” for one of my favorite actresses. I can just picture our be-feathered “Angelica” making her grand entrance at Churchill Downs and then winging her way to Royal Ascot and the Dubai World Cup next year!
