Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-85HatsThe Kentucky Derby is all about the ROSES! To celebrate this 141-year-old weekend of American Thoroughbred horse racing, I wanted to create a hat that would be suitable for the Kentucky Oaks as well as the Derby.

I began by creating a black silk hat base measuring just under 18 inches at the brim. I trimmed the hat with a large rose curl in fuchsia dupioni silk and hot pink organza. A medley of loden green metallic taffeta leaves and matching French ribbons frame the rose.

Blog-LizaDer13-114EA loden green button was hand stitched to the sash as the finishing touch for a Liza that is indeed as perfect for the Kentucky Oaks as it is for the Derby!
