The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #85, the “Liza”, a wide brim Derby hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at maggiemae.com.
The Kentucky Derby is all about the ROSES! To celebrate this 141-year-old weekend of American Thoroughbred horse racing, I wanted to create a hat that would be suitable for the Kentucky Oaks as well as the Derby.
I began by creating a black silk hat base measuring just under 18 inches at the brim. I trimmed the hat with a large rose curl in fuchsia dupioni silk and hot pink organza. A medley of loden green metallic taffeta leaves and matching French ribbons frame the rose.
