Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-76HatsI love working with customers who have a creative vision.  One spring a woman named Francesca called me regarding a custom hat. Her son was getting married and she wondered if my “Chelsea” hat style could be customized to complement a dark navy dress she had found and absolutely loved.

Blog-chelseader60-002Francesca sent me a spool of dark navy thread as a “clue” to the color of her dress. The thread perfectly matched the navy dupioni silk I had in stock and I was all set to begin.

I started with a hat foundation created out of the navy dupioni silk with a classic Chelsea brim style.

Blog-FrancescasChelseaDer60-032EI fashioned a single rose curl out of alternating layers of navy silk organza and satin and framed it with three navy silk organza leaves.

Blog-FrancescasChelseaDer60-032CI then took navy and white polka dot satin and fashioned a sash and three tapering “tails” that spilled down over the brim edge to achieve a sophisticated yet playful look. Francesca loved her new Chelsea design, and this year Francesca’s Chelsea is ready to make her polka dot Derby debut for the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby!
