The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Our hat for today is the “Tess” top hat chapeau that is found in Salon 3 of the Derby Hat Collection at maggiemae.com.
Our featured Tess is fashioned after her sister, the Tess BR144-002 design, which has luscious tulle that swirls around the crown before cascading down the back of the hat. She has been a fan favorite since her introduction and I knew it was time for her little sister to join her on the stage; this year’s Derby provided the perfect opportunity for her creation.
I created the top hat foundation from a silver dupioni silk. I then fashioned three small rose curls in alternating layers of coral shantung and organza which I clustered together and surrounded with a medley of leaves in matching coral shantung and satin. A hint of veiling and a matching sash were added, and voila, the new Tess top hat was ready for her debut at Churchill Downs!
Move over, big sister!
