The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #71, the “Michaela”, a wide brim chapeau that is found in Salon 2 of the Derby Hat Collection at maggiemae.com.
The introduction of “Michaela” a couple of years ago marked the debut of my silk organza “feathers” into the Derby Collection. Their creation came about as a direct result of a dilemma I experienced as a milliner several years ago.
Ladies continue to love hats trimmed with feathers; feathers are beautiful, like the birds they adorn, and their colors, wispy look and shape bring such elegance and playfulness to fascinators and wide brims alike. However I have a passion for the birds as well, and as I wrote in a blog called “For the Birds,” I realized that the feathers that allow the birds to soar so magnificently looked far better on them than on my hats.
After some creative imagining I came up with an alternative: silk organza “feathers!” I fashioned the feathers from strips of wispy organza fabric, sewn and then shaped into swirling, curving contours. The “Michaela” chapeau was the first wide brim design that featured these silk organza “feathers” which I fashioned out of a silver silk organza. The silver organza feathers spilling over the dupioni silk brim formed the perfect dramatic complement to the hot pink rose and jumbo silk bow…
The response to the Michaela design and my unique silk “feathers” has been amazing. Last Derby season I created and shipped a record number of hats trimmed with my “feathers” in a wide assortment of colors, shapes and sizes. My customers love their dramatic effect and their one-of-a-kind look .
Consequently, out of a personal conviction has come a creative solution and a trim design that is now a trademark for my hat company!
