The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #66, the “Mykele’s Cinco de Mayo”, a medium size Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.
Years ago a woman named Mykele wrote to me at Derby time with a custom hat request. She loved the “Lizzie” Derby style from my Collection, but wondered if I could create it in the colors of the Cinco de Mayo holiday which coincided with the Derby that year. I loved the idea and thought the colors would be stunning with the Lizzie.
For the foundation of the hat I began with a rich black dupioni silk base. I wanted to capture the traditional Cinco de Mayo colors of red, yellow and green throughout the design and the black base was the perfect stage for them. I began by alternating black and red silk organza brim layers and added a bit of extra wave and “kick” to them to reflect the great tradition of dance and music associated with the holiday.
For the trim centerpiece I created two rose curls out of red chiffon and framed them with dark green shantung leaves. I stood back and saw she really was stunning; Mykele’s new chapeau was ready for the Derby, inspired by the magic and colorful splendor of Cinco de Mayo!
