MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 63 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #63, the “Ava”, another brand new wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 2 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-63HatsI am a big fan of the old movie stars. Some of my favorites are Judy Garland, Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner.

I am also a big fan of polka dots. Over the years I have created many polka dot hats for customers – big dots, little dots, black on white dots, pink on brown dots, white on navy dots, black on red dots – every combination and size that you can possibly imagine!

To kick off the new 2015 Derby Hat Collection,  I thought it might be fun to combine my passion for some of the old-time movie starlets with my passion for polka dots!

I got started by fashioning a 17-inch hat foundation in black and white polka dot fabric, adding a red silk organza ruffled layer to the outer brim edge for added drama and dimension.

Blog-AvaDer191-001BI then took red silk organza and handcrafted a large rose curl, adding scrumptious  red satin leaves to frame it.

Blog-AvaDer191-001CNext, I created a sash out of red satin, laid it around the crown and added a matching red button for the final accent.

Blog-AvaDer191-001EI am now pleased to present the new “Ava” chapeau, ready for her Red Carpet debut at the 141st Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs!
