Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-57HatsThe 2015 Kentucky Oaks is just 8 weeks away and I love nothing better than creating pink hats to help my ladies celebrate Pink Out Day at Churchill Downs!

This year, I wanted to create a hat that would be versatile enough to wear on Kentucky Oaks Day and Kentucky Derby Day.

I began with a hat foundation created out of black dupioni silk in the classic Liza brim style.

Blog-CassandraDer198-001A-Web.LgI then fashioned 3 large rose curls in hot pink, red and white silks and set them aside.

Blog-CassandraDer198-001E-Web.MedI took black satin and fashioned a sash for the Liza crown, adding a black button accent on the back.  I swirled layer upon layer of black tulle alternating with hat veiling to cover the entire brim.

Blog-CassandraDer198-001D-Web.MedI named the new design for a dear friend and the new “Cassandra” is now ready for her grand debut at this year’s Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby celebrations at Churchill Downs.
