MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 55 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #55, the “Lauren”, a medium brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-55HatsThe Lauren was inspired by the “Lizzie” and her wavy silk organza brim layers…

Blog-LizzieDer57-030AFor the Lauren I wanted to incorporate these same wavy organza layers but in a more asymmetrical fashion. I began with a rich black dupioni silk hat base. I then made five black silk organza brim layers in varying widths and lengths and attached them to the brim at irregular intervals. I experimented with the layers until I had achieved a look that was both soft and appealing, like in the original Lizzie design. Blog-LaurenDer79-001D For the trim centerpiece I created a single black chiffon rose curl and framed it with black satin leaves and a matching sash that circles the crown. Blog-LaurenDer79-001C For the finishing touch a single black button was hand stitched to the back of the hat. Blog-LaurenDer79-001F I named her the “Lauren” hat after one of my favorite actresses of the Silver Screen” known for her stunning mystique. Wouldn’t our new Lauren be stunning trimmed with a single red or hot pink rose to celebrate Derby weekend?  MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® can make it happen for you!
