The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #53, the “Sedona”, a wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 2 at maggiemae.com.
This gorgeous silk Derby hat was inspired for Derby season by Pam Corrigan of Kingsport, Tennessee. Pam wanted an extra wide chapeau for her Derby adventure, full of drama and definitely some bling! As a starting point, she told me that she loved the colors and the ruffled brim layers of my Mykele’s Cinco de Mayo Derby design.
I got started on Pam’s vision by fashioning a 20-inch hat foundation in black dupioni silk, adding black and red silk organza ruffled layers to the outer brim edge for added drama and dimension.
Next I took a deep yellow dupioni silk and fashioned a double bow with yellow satin lining, adding tails and a sash. I then created black silk organza “feathers”, alternating black and red tulle sprays and finally a bit of black hat veiling accent for the rose.
The result? Pure confection. And I am now pleased to present for this year’s Derby the “Sedona” chapeau, ready once again for the Red Carpet at the 141st Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs!
The “Sedona” design can be viewed in all her glory on the Sedona hat webpage that was created to show the hat from many different angles.
