The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #36, the Lily, a medium brim Derby hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.
Recently a woman named Jackie requested a hat trimmed with a Stargazer Lily, the official flower for the Kentucky Oaks. Stargazer Lilies became the official flower of the Kentucky Oaks in 1991 when Lite Light wore the garland of lilies in the winner’s circle for the first time.
As the result of Jackie’s request, I created a new Stargazer Lily trim which became the centerpiece of the hat I designed for her. For the flower petals I used fuchsia dupioni silk and white silk organza with a mix of green tulle, yellow veiling and orange tulle for the flower’s center. A medley of green taffeta leaves provided the nest for the lily to rest against.
Inspired by Jackie’s new trim, I also created a hat for my Derby Collection in fuchsia dupioni silk and trimmed it with the Stargazer Lily, adding a green taffeta sash. Her colors and trim make the Lily a perfect choice for the Kentucky Oaks let alone the Derby or a spring garden party.
Today we are just five weeks away from the 141st running of this historic America race for 3 year-old Thoroughbred fillies. I can’t think of a more perfect hat for our Derby Hat Countdown to celebrate Ladies’ Day and the Kentucky Oaks than our very own “Lily” chapeau!
