Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-35Hats Some of my favorite things in life are red and white including candy canes at Christmas, red and white buttons and Valentines. And I love red and white chapeaux!

In the past I have created wide brim Derby hats measuring up to 25 inches. For some added drama, I wanted to push the envelope and see if I could create an even larger brim using a red and white color scheme.

I began with a bolt of white dupioni silk and created a hat base that measured approximately 22 inches. I then fashioned a red silk organza ruffle and hand stitched it along the brim edge for added dimension and color. Finally, I created a large rose curl out of red silk organza, surrounded it with a nest of red satin leaves and a silk organza triple bow for the centerpiece.
