MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 32 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #33, the “Chelsea”, another brand new medium brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-32HatsjpgThe Chelsea hat is a popular design for the Derby and Kentucky Oaks. A medium size brim, the Chelsea frames the face beautifully!

This year for Derby, I wanted to create a new Chelsea in the Pantone color called “Marsala”. Pantone, known world-wide for their color matching system, is closely watched by the fashion industry for their choices of the most popular current colors.

I fashioned the base of the hat out of a Marsala metallic taffeta.

Blog-ChelseaDer60-043B-Web.MedFor the trim centerpiece I fashioned a large rose curl out of alternating layers of deep burgundy taffeta and a crinkled wine organza, and framed it with a medley of mocha, soft gold organza leaves and black hat veiling.

Blog-ChelseaDer60-043C-Web.MedFor the final touch, I created a layered sash out of deep burgundy metallic taffeta and laid it around the crown. A matching pebble button was stitched to the back.
