MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 31 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #31, the medium brim “Marcelle” chapeau that is found in Salon 1 of the Derby Hat Collection at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-31HatsI received a request one year from a gentleman named Tim for a custom Derby hat. He wanted to surprise his wife for her 30th birthday which was also Derby Day. Tim’s choice for the hat was the original “Marcelle” which had just debuted in my Derby Hat Collection…

Blog-MarcelleBR162-001ATim thought his wife would like the Marcelle in a pink palette of colors. Because of the stunning detailing on the trims of the original, I knew great care had to be taken to retain the magic of the original design.

I fashioned the base of the hat out of shell pink dupioni silk with a rose pink tulle “skirt”. Next I created the Marguerite fleur out of two shades of pink organza for the petals and hot pink taffeta for the center.

Blog-DerbyHatCTDown-MarcelleDer162-001EA hot pink shantung was used to sculpt the leaves and the sash. For the finishing touches I added bright pink hat veiling, hot pink organza “feathers” and matching buttons. Voila!

Blog-MarcelleCustom3-Web.LgThe result was a stunning new Marcelle design that would be perfect for the Kentucky Oaks as well as the Derby, all pretty in PINK!
