The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #12, the “Carmen”, a wide brim Derby hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 2 at maggiemae.com. I love a classic wide brim hat for horse racing events. I also love the operatic character of Carmen and for Derby I wanted to create a hat that paid homage to Carmen.
I began with a hat foundation created out of a rich black dupioni silk. Thinking of Carmen, I trimmed the brim edge with a ruched black satin ruffle. Next I created a unique fleur design out of a medley of large alternating solid red and red metallic taffeta leaves fashioned in a “pinwheel” shape with a black silk organza rose curl for the center. For the finishing touches, I added a black satin sash with ruffled lining, swirling black tulle around the crown and a black button accent. Standing back, I realized my passion for both wide brim hats and opera had been incorporated into this splendid wide brim chapeau that has all the vivacious charm and stunning beauty of the operatic character for whom she was named, Carmen.
She is a chapeau that will make your own heart sing! For more views of the “Carmen” hat design shown above, please visit the Carmen Der158-001 hat webpage at maggiemae.com.
