A wonderful woman came to me last Derby season with a simple recipe for her idea of the perfect Derby chapeau. Her recipe included just three basic ingredients: a red silk hat, a single red Derby rose and “oodles of red tulle”.

I got to work and created a 17.5-inch Liza hat base in red dupioni silk. I fashioned the rose curl out of red satin and then added metallic taffeta leaves in two shades of green to frame it.

I then placed the rose curl centerpiece against layers of swirling red tulle which I ran around the crown.

Blog-LizaDer13-111HIt is indeed a stunning red Derby chapeau, thanks to the vision of a truly lovely lady!
