SallyStudio2-Web.LgMy name is Sally Faith Steinmann, and I am the owner and designer of MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Custom Millinery for Women. I specialize in ladies’ fancy hats for the Kentucky Derby, Royal Ascot, weddings, teas, and garden parties.

At MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®, the business is personal. All of my hats are handcrafted individually by me out of fine fabrics such as dupioni silk, taffeta and silk organza and are sized to fit you well. Custom design is my specialty, and I always welcome creative ideas for new designs!

I am also passionate about horse welfare. In particular, I support those who are trying to improve the lives of Thoroughbred racehorses while they are still racing and provide aftercare for them when they retire. In the fall of 2009 I created an innovative Derby hat auction series called “Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby”, that runs for 4 months each year and supports the retired racehorses of Old Friends in Kentucky. We just completed our 8th year of “Hats Off” and this unique fundraiser has raised over $31,000 in funds for Old Friends and at the same time helped to increase public awareness of the special needs of retired racehorses.

  1. Hey there Sally! You started following my blog so I wanted to check out your blog and say, “Hi!” Horses and hats – how fun! I live close to Del Mar, and I know that women wear the most remarkable hats to the horse races there. I’ve never been to a horse race myself. I do love horses, however (well, all animals really). I’m impressed that you created a hat auction series to support retired race horses – that’s really great! Thanks so much for following – I appreciate it! Celeste 🙂

      1. I don’t know much about the lives of racehorses. Hopefully I can learn more about their experience from your blog and then maybe I’ll write a post about it. Celeste 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words about my hats and photos, Joylene. A milliner by trade, the blog is where I simply “play” with words and photography – it’s like therapy for me with my busy hat life! 🙂

  2. Hello Sally, many thanks for finding the time and energy to check out my beeseeker blog (or was it the allotment one?).
Your support is really appreciated, and glad you found something you liked in there.

  3. Hi Sally! I am so glad to find you “again”. I have several lovely Maggie Mae hats, and enjoy wearing them or looking at them on my shelf. I haven’t needed to shop lately, but recently directed a friend to your site. Wow, it looks great! And a blog too! I pray that you are well, and think fondly of our chats together when I was beginning my hat collection journey. Blessings to you and your business!

    1. Aw, thank you so much! The horses AND the hats are such passions for me, and this was the perfect way to combine them for something good. I LOVE your blog, your photos are wonderful, I started following you today and feel so happy to have found you! 🙂

  4. Hi Sally, I just nominated you for the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award. Thank you for being one of the first ladies in the blogging community to reach out to me when I first started. It has really helped me to embrace this awesome and inspirational support network of fellow bloggers–And I just LOVE your hats! There were a few questions that came along with the nomination, you can check them out here: https://seekopenskies.wordpress.com/2015/01/29/the-blogging-sisterhood/

    Happy blogging!

  5. Oh Marion, how wonderful to hear from you. I miss it, too. Life became very hectic several years ago with my Mom’s health issues. As her primary, I had to make choices with my time. But the GOOD news is, I never stopped the photography! Are you on Facebook? I still share the photos there, when I can. But I have also been thinking of trying to get the blog going again. I cannot begin to tell you how much your comment means to me. I hope you are well… ❤

      1. I understand that, Marion, but when I found your page there was nowhere to do the “Add Friend” option. So you will need to find me at the address I sent you, and do the “add friend” option so you can see all of my photos of our beloved wild ones. ❤

  6. PS And I do have my Hats and Horses Facebook page (that features the 12 -year Derby hat fundraiser that I do for the retired racehorses of Old Friends) there as well as my hats page. It’s the Sally page where I post all of my recent photos of our wild ones. ❤
