MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 2 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #2, the “Liza”, a wide brim design found in Derby Hat Salon 1.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-2HatsI have a fondness for the Liza. It was one of my earliest designs for the Derby Hat Collection and for a long time it was my widest brim. Measuring approximately 17″ end to end, there is something about the Liza that makes her easy to wear and  love. And this style has many, many different “looks” as you can see if you pop into Salon 1 of the Derby Hat Collection

The Liza Der13-113 was the result of a customer’s request for a classic wide brim style that would be suitable not only for the Derby but also for weddings and fancy teas. Created in silver dupioni silk and trimmed with a single jumbo navy silk organza Marguerite, navy and charcoal silk bow loops and deep blue tulle, I think you’ll agree that this grand Lady is simply scrumptious and fits the bill for just about any occasion, including the Derby!

MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 3 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #3, the “Annabelle Lee”, a medium brim Derby hat design found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-3HatsThe inspiration for Annabelle Lee was my Annabelle Derby design, a fan favorite for the Derby, Kentucky Oaks and fancy teas, with a distinctive “butterfly wings” brim.

Blog-AnnabelleDer7-003-B-2I wanted something different for the new Annabelle Lee design that would be similar in shape to the Annabelle but with a wider brim for a bolder look.

I began with deep plum dupioni silk, fashioning an Annabelle hat base with a slightly larger brim, yet making sure it kept the same “butterfly wings” that are part of Annabelle’s magic.

Blog-AnnabelleLeeDer180-001AFor the centerpiece I fashioned a rose curl out of alternating layers of deep purple shantung and silk organza. I framed the rose with plum orchid taffeta leaves and a matching sash. A clear plum purple bead button adorns the back seam.

Blog-AnnabelleLeeDer180-001B

Blog-AnnabelleLeeDer180-001GI stood back and realized the finished chapeau had achieved everything I’d hoped for which included the romantic flair of the original Annabelle, but with a brim that could be turned up for lots of attitude. This lady is definitely ready to make her debut on the grand stages of the Kentucky Derby and Royal Ascot!

MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 5 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #5, the “Sydney”, another brand new wide brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 1 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-5HatsI love the Liza hat style. Measuring about 17 inches across, she’s not too big but still has the pizzazz of a wide brim!

This year for the Derby I wanted to create a hat similar in dimensions to the Liza but with a fedora style crown.

I got started by fashioning a Liza hat foundation in cream dupioni silk.

I then took white dupioni silk, white silk organza and a soft pink organza and handcrafted a large rose curl, adding dusty sage organza ribbons for leaves.

Blog-SydneyDer197-001D-Web.MedNext, I created a sash out of black taffeta, laid it around the crown and added five black silk organza “feathers” and a matching black pebble button for the final accents.

Blog-SydneyDer197-001F-Web.MedAnd the new “Sydney” chapeau is now ready to make her debut in the Derby Hat Collection!  The “Sydney” is the perfect choice not only for Churchill Downs but for weddings, teas, Royal Ascot, Melbourne Cup and beyond.

Today we are featuring Hat #6, the “Corinne” wide brim chapeau that is found in Salon 2 of the Derby Hat Collection at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-6HatsThe Corinne debuted during the 2011 hat season and since its introduction has become a favorite among my Derby hat ladies. Every year I receive custom requests for this original design in a wide assortment of colors, textures and trims.

The original Corinne is a stunning confection of black and white. The base of the hat is created in white dupioni silk and measures approximately 21 inches, end to end.

Blog-CorinneDer161-001I The hat is trimmed with a giant Marguerite fleur comprised of three layers of black silk organza with a black silk rose curl center.

MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 7 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #7, the “Andrea”, a medium size Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-7HatsI recently created a collection of carriage driving hats for women to wear for their carriage driving competitions. One of my favorite hats in the collection is the “Meg” chapeau.

Blog-MegSMM86-001AI love the 2-layer brim of the Meg, and I thought that it might be fun to create a Derby rose-trimmed version for this year’s Derby Hat Collection.

I also wanted to create this design to reflect a very special member of my family from St. Louis named Andrea. Andrea was born on the Fourth of July and she loves her family, her beautiful gardens and historic Williamsburg.

For the foundation of the hat I began with a navy blue and white dupioni silk base, alternating the blue and the white silks to give the design a feeling of elegance and style.

Blog-AndreaDer188-001EFor the trim centerpiece I created a single large red rose out of alternating layers of red dupioni silk and silk organza, adding a medley of spring and lime green taffeta leaves. To frame the rose, I crafted a double bow out of navy shantung, adding a bit of red hat veiling to make it pop!

Blog-AndreaDer188-001BFinally, I fashioned a sash out of navy shantung, folded it in half and placed it around the crown. A single red button to the back of the hat added just the right finishing touch.

Blog-AndreaDer188-001GI stood back and saw she really was stunning; my new Derby chapeau was more than ready for the Run for the Roses, inspired by the sweet spirit of a woman  whom I am so proud to call my sister!

MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 10 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #10, the “Brooklyn”, a  brand new extra wide brim design found in Salon 2 of the Derby Hat Collection

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-10HatsI love creating hats with ruffled silk organza brim edges and this year I have added several new ones to my Derby Hat Collection.

With our tough winter this year on the Cape, I have had a hankering for a wide brim hat with ruffles trimmed with pink and green tones to herald in the warmer days and new growth!

I got started by fashioning a 17-inch hat foundation in white dupioni silk, adding a white silk organza ruffled layer to the brim edge with a fancy braiding accent.

Blog-BrooklynDer193-001E-Web.MedFor the trim centerpiece I created a large Marguerite out of white silk organza petals with a rose curl created out of fuchsia chiffon and shantung for the center. I added a medley of bright green organza, taffeta and satin leaves to frame the Marguerite.

Blog-BrooklynDer193-001F-Web.MedFor the finishing touches I created a sash out of spring green satin lined with apple green organza, laid it around the crown and added a clear button as an accent.
