MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 42 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #42, the “”, the “Tess” top hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-42HatsI created the original “Tess” top hat for the Bridal Hat Collection at MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®. It’s a pure white silk confection trimmed with matching silk rose curls, satin leaves and sumptuous gathered tulle.  She has a very traditional bridal look.

Blog-TessBR144-001DThe trend in recent years for adding bold colors to the traditionally all-white-and-ivory bridal palette inspired me last year to create a top hat adorned with hot pink trims for a more “equestrian” style look. And indeed the new “Tess” was a hit for last year’s Kentucky Oaks.

Blog-TessBR144-002EThis year I wanted to once again make another version of the Tess and use red trimmings to celebrate the tradition of the red Derby rose.

Beginning with a white dupioni silk top hat foundation, I added a red taffeta sash. I then took yards of red tulle which I swirled around the crown, softly gathering the tulle in the back to form a bow with tails spilling down over the brim.

Blog-TessDer144-004E-RedFor the trim centerpiece I fashioned a cluster of three medium roses out of red dupioni silk which I nestled into the bow in the back of the hat.

Blog-TessDer144-004I-Crop-Red

Blog-TessDer144-004F-RedThe look was once again “equestrian” and decidedly romantic at the same time. This new Derby-inspired “Tess” is ready to join in the celebrations for the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby!

MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 46 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #46, the Billie Der116-003 top hat Derby design that is found in Salon 4 of the Derby Hat Collection at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-46HatsI have been making top hats for many years. They make a great look for a Derby adventure as well as for weddings and Royal Ascot!

The “Billie” was the very first mini top hat design that I ever created.

I began with a black dupioni silk hat foundation. For the trim centerpiece I fashioned a single large rose curl out of alternating layers of deep garnet red metallic taffeta and black silk organza.

Blog-BillieDer116-003Fweb.MedI then took black netting and crafted a free form bow with medium tails.

Blog-BillieDer116-003Eweb.MedBlog-BillieDer116-003Dweb.MedSuch a wonderful equestrian flair that is perfect for an equine sporting events like the Derby, Breeders’ Cup or carriage driving competitions!

MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 54 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #54, the “Taylor”, a brand new Derby top hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-54HatsSeveral days ago I debuted the “Taylor” chapeau, a brand new Derby top hat design with a flat wired brim that can be shaped for different looks.

Blog-TaylorDer186-001D-Web.MedBecause I love black and white hat combinations, I wanted to make sure that I also created a black and white silk Taylor top hat for this year’s Derby and Royal Ascot.

I fashioned the base of the hat out of white dupioni silk, adding a flat, wired brim.

Blog-TaylorDer186-002E-Web.MedI trimmed the crown of the hat with a black and white pinstripe linen band. I then added black hat veiling all around the crown, letting it spill over the brim edges.

For the trim centerpiece I fashioned a double bow out of the same pinstripe linen as the band and added a spray of black silk organza “feathers” for a dramatic accent.

Blog-TaylorDer186-002C-Web.MedThe final trim element was a black pebble button which I added to the back of the hat.

Blog-TaylorDer186-002F-Web.MedAnd our second new “Taylor” top hat design was finished and is now ready for your Derby adventure, Royal Ascot, carriage driving competitions and other equine sporting events!

MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 61 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #61, the “Taylor”, a brand new Derby top hat design that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-61HatsSeveral years ago, a lady contacted me regarding a custom Derby hat design. Together we created the “Tess” hat which has been a fan favorite for years for weddings and teas as well as the Kentucky Derby.

Blog-TessBR144-002EThis year for Derby, I wanted to create a top hat with a flatter brim design that would also be created with wire in the construction so that it could be reshaped as desired for many different looks.

I fashioned the base of the hat out of a mocha and black striped taffeta and added a flat, wired black dupioni silk brim.

Blog-TaylorDer186-001B-Web.MedI trimmed the crown of the hat with a narrow black braid, and then swirled soft mocha tulle around the crown, gathering it softly in the back in a free form “bow”.

Blog-TaylorDer186-001G-Web.MedFor the trim centerpiece I fashioned a single black silk organza rose curl and framed it with a medley of chocolate and gold organza leaves. I nestled the floral centerpiece into the center of the bow and let long tails of the mocha tulle spill down the brim.

Blog-TaylorDer186-001H-Web.MedI love the look of top hats. They have an “equestrian” flair and are decidedly romantic. The new “Taylor” top hat design is perfect for your Derby adventure and all your equine sporting events!
