The Story of the “Mr. Cowboy” Derby Hat for Old Friends

The third Derby hat up for bid in our 2018 “Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby” auction series honors New York-bred, Mr. Cowboy. This is the ninth consecutive year that MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® and Old Friends have teamed up for this unique online shopping experience, with over $33,000 raised for the retired racehorses of Old Friends.

An annual event, “Hats Off”  features four one-of-a-kind couture Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® with all of the proceeds from the sale of the hats going to Old Friends.

Mr. Cowboy, the 8 year-old son of Stonesider, is perhaps best known for his thrilling victory at Saratoga on August 26, 2012.

Mr. Cowboy retired in 2014 and is now an official Old Friend at the Old Friends satellite farm, Old Friends at Cabin Creek in New York.

Director of Old Friends at Cabin Creek, JoAnn Pepper, describes Mr. Cowboy in the following way: “Mr Cowboy is one of the most entertaining horses I know. For a small treat he will race anyone, anytime. He also entertains himself well with his jolly ball and road cone. He’s very lovable and we are thankful he’s in our lives!”

The fact that Mr. Cowboy is alive and well today is a miracle, for he was not breathing when he was born during the wee hours of March 15, 2009 at Cabin Creek farm. The owner of what was a boarding farm at the time, JoAnn Pepper, gave the tiny chestnut colt human-to-equine resuscitation which soon revived him.

A long period of recovery followed for the little colt that JoAnn named “Mr. Cowboy”, while another resident of Cabin Creek named Moonshadow Gold became Mr. Cowboy’s guardian and mentor.

You can read Mr. Cowboy’s story in the Q&A I did with JoAnn in a recent blog.

James Bond was the trainer of Mr. Cowboy when he had his big win at Saratoga in the summer of 2012. In an August 27, 2012 Bloodhorse article Mr. Cowboy’s trainer, James Bond was quoted as saying, “There are miracles in this world, and I think he (Cowboy) was a miracle. But the biggest miracle is he got to be with Mark and JoAnn. They believed in him and they never gave up.”

A minor injury in 2014 resulted in Cowboy heading back home to Cabin Creek where he has been enjoying a happy retirement ever since surrounded by all those who know and love him.

Clearly a very special hat was needed to reflect Mr. Cowboy’s bright chestnut coat, his yellow and green Cabin Creek racing silk colors, his buddy Moonshadow Gold, and Mr. Cowboy’s  bloodlines.

But first, I needed to learn more about Mr. Cowboy’s life and career. I went online for inspiration and watched videos of his wins on the track, studied his pedigree and his connections, and before I knew it I had the background information that I needed.

I began the creative process by making a rough sketch of the hat followed by selecting a mix of fabrics that would make the hat come alive.

The foundation of the design was created with a strong Western flavor to reflect his dam, I’m a Real Cowgirl, and dam sire, Western Expression.

Fashioned out of deep rich yellow dupioni silk, the hat was shaped with a fedora-style crown and upturned “cowboy” style brim.

A thin strip of fancy dark green braiding was top stitched to a band of chocolate taffeta along the brim edge to give the edge a finished look.

For the trim centerpiece a large rose was sculpted out of swirling layers of chocolate organza and dupioni silk and placed along the front crown of the hat. A shiny gold star black button was stitched to the center of the rose with a medley of emerald green dupioni silk leaves with chocolate braiding loops to frame it.

Fabric “feathers”, a MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® trademark, were fashioned in varying sizes out of chocolate organza lined with golden yellow organza and layered and shaped to add a splash of dramatic detail to the floral trim.

Enhancing the hat’s Western flair, a unique sash was created out of braided chocolate and emerald dupioni silks and laid around the crown of the hat.

A large brassy colored button with a spiral design was added to the back of the hat for the finishing touch. Along with the gold organza-lined feathers, this button is a tribute to Moonshadow Gold, the horse whom JoAnn Pepper describes as, “The one who raised Mr. Cowboy”.

The lining for the “Mr. Cowboy” hat was created from a rich brown satin to coordinate with the trims.

The finished “Mr. Cowboy” hat design measures approximately 16 inches across, exclusive of the silk “feathers” which extend approximately 10 inches over the brim.

As a physical remembrance of Mr. Cowboy, several strands of his tail hair were braided and woven into the trim of the hat, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind Derby chapeau that captures Mr. Cowboy not only in spirit but in substance as well.

Once the hat was completed it was on its way to Old Friends for the grand photo shoot with our model, Acacia Courtney.  From everything I heard everyone had a wonderful time!

Even when Mr. Cowboy tried to eat the HAT!  😉

We want to extend a big thank you to Acacia Courtney who traveled all the way up from Florida to model the “Mr. Cowboy” chapeau  for us.

And a special thank you to Connie Bush of Tiger Eye Photography for her stunning images of Acacia and Mr. Cowboy.

The “Mr. Cowboy” is now up for bid on EBay. Bidding ends Sunday, March 11th at 8 PM EST.

The Story of the “Touch Gold” Derby Hat for Old Friends

For the ninth consecutive year MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® and Old Friends have teamed up once again for a unique online shopping experience called “Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby”!

An annual event, “Hats Off”  features one-of-a-kind couture Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® to benefit the retired racehorses of Old Friends.  All proceeds from the sale of the hats go to Old Friends.

The second Derby hat up for bid in our 2018 auction series honors Kentucky-bred, Touch Gold.

Emily and Carson Sullivan model the Touch Gold chapeau!

Touch Gold, the  24 year-old son of Deputy Minister, is perhaps best known for his thrilling victory in the 1997 Belmont Stakes over the much-favored Triple Crown hopeful, Silver Charm.  In a twist of fate, these two, who were once rivals, now both bask in the sun and roll on the green grass at Dream Chase Farm. To learn more about this great champion, please visit the Touch Gold webpage.

Old Friends volunteer Beth Shannon described Touch Gold as “the ultimate tough guy with a heart of pure gold. He’s fierce, he’s feisty, he’s rough, and he’s loving.”

One has only to watch the big race between Touch Gold and Silver Charm that Belmont Park morning back in June 1997 to understand the athleticism and the tenacity of this amazing champion.

“Touch Gold is just like his hat…bold, big and beautiful.” – Michael Blowen, President and Founder of Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement.

I wanted to create a very special hat that would showcase Touch Gold’s beautiful bay coat, his blue and black racing silk colors and his bold spirit and athleticism;  all carefully woven together with threads of “gold” as reflected not only in his achievements but in his heart as well.

But first, I needed to do my homework! To learn more about Touch Gold’s life and career I went online and watched videos of his wins on the track, studied his pedigree and his connections, and before I knew it I had the background information that I needed.

I made a rough sketch of the hat, selected a mix of fabrics that would make it come alive and the creative process was underway!

I chose a soft blue dupioni silk for the foundation of the design.

Next, I took alternating layers of shimmering black and chocolate organza and fashioned an asymmetrical ruffled brim edge, stitching it to the edge of the brim to convey the movement of this Thoroughbred athlete at full gallop.

For a finishing touch, I hand stitched a thin strip of fancy black braiding to the ruffled brim edges.

Next came the trim. Out of swirling layers of soft blue, aqua blue and gold organza I sculpted a single large rose and placed it along the front crown of the hat.

A shiny black button framed in gold provided a stunning accent for the center of the rose!

Sheer black and gold organza  were the perfect materials for creating the leaves, which were then top stitched with gold embroidery thread.

For the final trim element I fashioned a medley of fabric “feathers”, a MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® trademark, out of black and gold organza and layered and shaped them to add a splash of dramatic detail.

Using a scrumptious chocolate crinkle taffeta I stitched together an elegant sash to encircle the crown of the hat…

And chose a rich brown satin for the lining of the “Touch Gold” hat to coordinate with the trims.

For the finishing touch, I found an exquisite gold-tinged black pebble button which I added to the back of the hat!

And as a physical remembrance of Touch Gold, several strands of this great champion’s tail hair were braided and woven into the trim of the hat, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind Derby chapeau that captures Touch Gold not only in spirit but in substance as well.

Once the hat was completed it was on its way to Old Friends for the grand photo shoot with our models.

We want to extend a big thank you to Emily and Carson Sullivan who were splendid models for the “Touch Gold” chapeau as well as to Matt and Wendy Wooley of EquiSport Photos who always work their camera magic for these auctions.  A big thanks also goes to Bella Rose for providing Emily’s dress.

The “Touch Gold” is now up for bid on EBay. Bidding ends Sunday, February 11th at 8 PM EST.

“Hats Off to the Horses” Welcomes Emily and Carson Sullivan

“Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby” continues with a second hat up for bid to honor 1997 Belmont Stakes winner, Touch Gold!

This unique Derby hat auction series, now in its ninth year, is an annual event which features one-of-a-kind couture Derby hats created and donated by Sally Faith Steinmann of MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® to benefit the retired racehorses of Old Friends in KY. All proceeds from the auction go to Old Friends.

This month we are delighted to have jockey Carson Sullivan and his wife Emily joining us to model our “Touch Gold” auction hat for us!

Carson is one of American horse racing’s up-and-coming riders.  He and Emily were married last year and now live in Shelbyville, Kentucky. Both Emily and Carson grew up around horses and we are delighted with their news of a baby due in April!

I recently got the chance to interview Emily and Carson following their big “Touch Gold” hat photo shoot at Old Friends this past October.

___________________________________________

Emily and Carson, welcome to my Hats and Horses blog!

We are thrilled to have you join our “Hats Off” team for our 9th straight year with our annual Derby hat auction fundraiser for the retired racehorses of Old Friends. I’m so glad I got the chance to catch up with you and ask you a few questions for this Q&A!

Sally: Where are you living now, or do you spend the year in other locations for for your racing schedule?

Carson: We currently live in Shelbyville and are here year round. We are expecting a baby in April so I stayed with Emily for the winter.

Sally: For each of you, what is your earliest memory of a horse? Did you both ride when you were little?

Emily: I’ve ridden since about the age of 3. I didn’t get into racing until after college, but grew up jumping and general pleasure riding. My family has always owned horses so I was around them from a young age.

Emily when she was 12, riding her first horse named “Muddy’ with her sister, Alice

Carson: My earliest memory of a horse is sitting on my grandfather’s pony at the track. He’s a racehorse trainer in Florida so I was around them a lot.

Sally: Carson, did you ride racehorses when you were young?

Carson: I actually didn’t ride really until the age of 26. But as a kid I sat on a few ponies.

Sally:  When did you know that you wanted to be a jockey, and what is it about riding racehorses that you enjoy?

Carson: I always wanted to but was kept away from it by my family, until my mid twenties. I love the feeling of two athletes being a team.

Sally: What would you like to accomplish in the coming year in your racing career?

Carson: I’d like to win a graded stake and possibly a riding title.

Sally: You’ve ridden some incredibly talented racehorses over the years; do you have any favorites among them? Or perhaps a favorite race?

Carson: My favorite horse was Little Orphan Ellie trained by Aggie Ordonez at Golden Gate Fields. We had a great few runs together and she was a horse I just really connected with. She was orphaned twice as a baby and was considered to be pretty unfriendly but we just clicked! Favorite race was an allowance at Churchill on Obsidian Splendor trained by James Fugate. It was my first win in KY so it was pretty special for me.

Carson riding at Golden Gate Fields

Sally: Being a jockey means early mornings and a lot of travel. Tell me, what would be the perfect day to you?

Carson: A light morning with races close to home and a lot of wins!

Sally: I read in an April 2017 interview on Horse Racing Radio Network that you’re quite a musician! What do you play? Do you sing? Do you ever miss the music?

Carson: I play guitar, I tried to sing but I’m terrible. I was in a band in NY with a few friends and did that for a while before I became a jockey. There are definitely times I miss it.

Sally: Emily, have you had a history with horses as well? Growing up did you have any experiences around horses or around racing? Do you own any horses?

Emily: I’ve been riding since about age 3 and grew up taking lessons, owning horses, and as a kid there were a few situations where I was mucking stalls in exchange for rides on the weekends before I got my first horse. My mum has ridden all her life too so it just rubbed off on me! I’ve always had the ‘project horses’ rather than the pony club-ready dream ponies! <laughs> I didn’t get into racing until after college. I have a BA (hons) degree in Equine Business Management so when I was done with that I became the marketing coordinator, then marketing manager, at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California. We actually own three ex-racehorses and two miniature horses.

Emily riding her OTTB Rocky
Emily with her OTTB, Belle

Sally: Being the wife of a jockey must mean quite a bit of travel time. How would you describe your perfect day?

Emily: The perfect day for me would be pretty simple! Wake up, take care of our 10 million animals (slight exaggeration but close), have a good breakfast, spend some time with Carson before the races, then go and get some wins! Come home, make a nice dinner and relax! We’re constantly surrounded by animals so they’re always a part of that!

Rocky and one of the Sullivan’s mini horses, Anna

Sally: Congratulations to you both on your recent wedding in 2017! How/where did the two of you meet?

Emily: We met at Golden Gate Fields. Our time there overlapped for about 6 months so we got lucky! It was at the Christmas party that is held for the backside workers and their families. I was pouring sodas and Carson was taking them to tables! It wasn’t until a few months later that we eventually went on a date.

The Christmas party where Emily and Carson first met!

Sally: Am I right that you are living in Louisville, Kentucky now? How do you like living in the Bluegrass State? Do you have any pets/livestock in your life together now?

Carson: We live in Shelbyville as it’s a perfect location between Louisville and Lexington. We love it here! Although this cold winter is a little tough compared to CA! We currently have five horses, two dogs, three house cats, one barn cat and a guinea pig!

Carson and Jack

Sally: Our February hat that’s now up on the block is the “Touch Gold”chapeau that you modeled at Old Friends. Had either of you ever been to Old Friends before, or met Touch Gold?

Emily: Neither of us had ever been! Or met Touch Gold! It is such a great place and as owners of three retired racehorses, we love what they do!

Sally: How did the photo shoot go?

Emily: it was great! I was three months pregnant at the time so it was nice to actually dress up and do my makeup haha!!

Carson: We really enjoyed it! And loved that it’s for a great cause.

Sally: Did you get a chance to meet Little Silver Charm (the mini horse), or any of the other retirees while you were there at Dream Chase farm that day for the shoot?

Emily: We did meet Silver Charm! It was a really wet day so he was hiding in his shelter, but we briefly got to meet him! We’re a fan of minis!

Carson with their other mini, Tallie

Carson: It was cool walking through the barn and meeting some of the horses. Alphabet Soup being one of them! Most were out in their turnouts but we got to say hi to a few.

Sally: I have to tell you that you both look GREAT in hats! Do you think of yourselves as “hat people”? Where is your favorite place to wear a hat (other than on a horse wearing a racing helmet)?

Emily: I’ve always been more of a fascinator person, in fact this photo shoot was my first time wearing a nice big hat! I really loved it…and may have actually become a hat person!!

Sally: I am sure that people are going to be inspired by your support of Old Friends. Why is it important for us to support these retired Thoroughbred athletes, and do you have any suggestions for how people can get involved and participate in helping the retired racehorses?

Emily: It’s something that I’ve always felt strongly about. I think as an industry it’s important to remember that without these athletes, there would be no sport! Therefore it’s the duty of anyone involved in racing, to ensure that the horses get a retirement they deserve. Whether that’s a pasture full of grass and a happy retirement, or a new career! Many of them still have SO much to Give! We have a horse at home named Rocky, who retired from racing at age three.

The Sullivans’ OTTB, Rocky

He’s now seven and is in his element jumping fences! He’s really really talented and willing to learn!

Emily riding their other OTTB, Leo

I just think it’s important to remember that after racing they don’t become ‘useless’. They’ve given their working years to us, so the least we can do is support them in their retirement! In terms of helping, I think educating yourself is the best way! Go to Old Friends, learn about the horses, and see how you can help! Donate, spread the word, just become educated about it.

Carson: Without these animals we wouldn’t be able to get to do what we love. So like Emily has said, it’s important that we take responsibility for them even after they’re finished racing.

Sally: Thanks again you two for helping us with our Ninth Annual “Hats Off to the Horses” auction series with the “Touch Gold” chapeau. We are really fortunate to have you on board this year as part of our “Hats Off” team!

And to my readers, please enjoy this “behind-the-scenes” video from the “Touch Gold” photo shoot with Emily and Carson at Old Friends, a special treat from our friends Matt and Wendy Wooley of EquiSport Photos!

The Story of the Awesome Gem Hat for Old Friends

For the ninth consecutive year MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® and Old Friends have teamed up for a unique online shopping experience called “Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby”!

This year our unique Derby hat fundraiser began on January 1st and continues all the way to the Derby. An annual event, it  features one-of-a-kind couture Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® to benefit the retired racehorses of Old Friends.  All proceeds from the sale of the hats go to Old Friends.

This one-of-a-kind Derby hat honors Kentucky-bred Awesome Gem, winner of the 2010 Hollywood Gold Cup posting a stunning victory over Rail Trip who is now Awesome Gem’s farm mate at Old Friends. To learn more about this great champion, please visit the Awesome Gem webpage.

When I asked Beth Shannon, volunteer at Old Friends, her impression of Awesome Gem she responded, “Awesome Gem is an absolute sweetheart. He’s as friendly and as kind as he is beautiful. When he first retired to Old Friends he was so people-oriented that he almost seemed to think he was a ‘people’, and when he’d passed his quarantine period he seemed a little puzzled to be turned out with horses. But that passed and he is now a comfortable and fully accepted member of his herd. Its three other members are Fabulous Strike, Sokitumi Samurai, and Marshall Rooster – all nice horses just as he is.”

Beth continued: ”He combines the physical activeness and spiritedness of a youngish Thoroughbred with benign goodness.”

Clearly, a very special hat was needed to honor this charming new retiree of Old Friends. The resulting hat design showcases Awesome Gem’s bright chestnut coat, his familiar West Point Thoroughbreds racing silk colors of black and yellow, and his kind spirit and athleticism.

To learn more about Awesome Gem’s life and career I went online and watched videos of his wins on the track, and before I knew it I had the background information that I needed.

Next, a sketch of the hat was made, fabrics were chosen and the creative process was underway.

The foundation of the wide flat brim design was created out of deep yellow dupioni silk with a black lace overlay and black taffeta brim edge.

To showcase Awesome Gem’s thrilling 2010 Hollywood Gold Cup win, a single large yellow rose was fashioned out of swirling layers of deep yellow dupioni silk and soft lemon organza and placed along the front crown of the hat.

A bouquet of sparkling chocolate, crystal and platinum beads was created to form a jewel center for the rose.

The rose was then framed with a medley of fiery reddish brown organza loops…

And black silk organza fabric “leaves” were added beneath them.

A large triple bow with tails was fashioned out of sheer black silk organza, top-stitched with chocolate thread and then sculpted to provide a stunning yet delicate “nest” for the bejeweled floral trim.

Next, a pleated sash, created out of black silk organza was made to encircle the crown of the hat.

A large shimmering button, created from the same chocolate, crystal and platinum beads used for the rose center ornament, was added to the back of the hat for the finishing touch.

The lining for the “Awesome Gem” hat was formed from a rich black satin to coordinate with the trims.

As a physical remembrance of Awesome Gem, several strands of his tail hair were braided and woven into the trim of the hat, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind Derby chapeau that captures Awesome Gem not only in spirit but in substance as well.

Once the hat was completed it was on its way to Old Friends for the grand photo shoot with our models.

We want to extend a big thank you to Krystal, Jon and Aubrey Court who were splendid models for the Awesome Gem chapeau as well as to Matt and Wendy Wooley of EquiSport Photos who always work their camera magic for these auctions.

For a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the photo shoot, please enjoy the video provided by EquiSport Photos.

The “Awesome Gem” auction hat is now up for bid on EBay. Bidding ends Thursday, January 11th at 8 PM EST.
