The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!
Today we are featuring Hat #1, our final hat in the Countdown, the “Cheryl’s Liza”, a wide brim design found in Derby Hat Salon 1.
The process of creating a custom chapeau is something that I simply love!
Last Derby season a good customer named Cheryl asked if I would create a wide brim hat to match a hot pink lace dress that she had found for the Kentucky Oaks. She wanted a design that would include all of the trim elements of the Liza Der134-113 which she loved.
Cheryl sent me a photo of the dress and I pulled together a swatch sheet of fabrics that matched. I always stress to my custom hat customers they need to see the fabrics in person as computer monitors often translate colors differently. The mailing of swatches is time well spent in creating the perfect Derby chapeau.
When Cheryl received the swatches she found that the creamy champagne dupioni would make the perfect foundation color for her “Liza’s” hot pink trimmings.
I began by creating a nearly 18-inch hat foundation in creamy champagne dupioni silk.
The Marguerite centerpiece was created out of hot pink organza for the petals with a creamy champagne silk rose curl center.
A medley of creamy champagne silk and shantung leaves and bow loops in glistening hot pink organza were added frame the Marguerite and make it pop!
A hot pink taffeta sash was stitched into place and layer upon layer of hot pink tulle were wrapped and gathered around the crown. A hot pink button on the back provided the finishing touch.
I think you’ll agree that Cheryl’s custom Liza chapeau was the perfect topper for her lovely hot pink dress on Kentucky Oaks Day!
