MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Launches Second Annual Derby Hat Countdown

Welcome to the Second Annual Derby Hat Countdown featuring 101 Derby hats by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®! Because our Countdown was so well received last year, we are running it again and adding a few surprises.

Blog-SallyH-2014DerbyHat1The Derby falls on May 2nd this year and we are just 101 days away from what many call “the most exciting two minutes in sports”. To mark those 101 days I’ll be showcasing one selected hat each day from my Derby Hat Collection. Each featured hat will have a brief introduction and a link to its own webpage where you can see it from all the different angles and read about what inspired its creation and the materials that were used to fashion it.

Whether you are attending this year’s Run for the Roses and searching for the perfect hat to wear or simply love fancy hats, I hope to satisfy your passion one day and one hat at a time!

And now we present our first hat in the Derby Hat Countdown… the “Hanalee”!

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-2015-101HatsThis gorgeous silk Derby hat was inspired by Sally Hamlin, a dedicated  horsewoman. Sally is a physical scientist from Washington, DC specializing in air quality and the proud owner of a 9-year-old off track Thoroughbred named Make Me King (“King”). She also has a jewelry business, SHE Jewelry Designs, which features jewelry designed to celebrate the OTTB (off the track Thoroughbred). All proceeds from her jewelry sales go to Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Montpelier.

Blog-SallyH-and-King-at-october2013showLast year Sally requested a custom hat design for her Derby adventure that would be elegant and most important of all, “comfortable and no fuss”.

After going through my Derby Hat Collection, she told me she liked the “Marcelle”, the “Chelsea” and the “Marmee”.

She also loved the trim elements and style of the “Hidden Lake” chapeau that I had created several years ago for our “Hats Off to the Horses” Derby hat fundraiser for Old Friends.

Sally found the perfect coral print Derby dress and soon sketches for a hat in a coral/gray/black combination were underway. We worked together and came up with an amazing style that incorporated sumptuous black dupioni silk, silver silk organza, wispy tulle and coral shantung; very stylish and totally comfortable for the races!

Blog-HanaleeDer181-001APlease enjoy these views of the “Hanalee” Derby chapeau. The “Hanalee” can be seen in all her glory on the Hanalee hat webpage that was created to show the hat from many different angles.

Blog-HanaleeDer181-001DBlog-HanaleeDer181-001PBlog-HanaleeDer181-001TAs we approach Derby Day, I invite you to keep checking my Derby Hat Collection at the MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® website. MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS Derby Hat Countdown – 46 of 101

The Derby Hat Countdown continues featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Today we are featuring Hat #46, the “Lacresha”, a medium brim Derby chapeau that is found in Derby Hat Salon 3 at maggiemae.com.

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-46Hats

I have a passion for red and white hats. Red is one of my favorite colors and when contrasted with white, the effect is vivid and dramatic. I also love the popular British television series, “Downton Abbey” and I decided for this year’s Derby I would create a chapeau that combined all of these passions into one design.

I began with a medium hat base created out of white dupioni silk, fashioned into an asymmetrical shape to give it a jaunty look.

Blog-LacreshaDer54-003B

I handcrafted a single delicate rose curl out of red silk organza and then took red satin and created a medley of fabric leaves to frame it.

Blog-LacreshaDer54-003E

A splash of red tulle around the crown and the hat was finished. It made me think of Violet, the Dowager Countess of Downton Abbey, heading for her first Derby adventure across the Pond. And I named her the “Lacresha” after a dear friend who equally loves the Dowager, the chapeau and mint juleps!Blog-LacreshaDer54-003C

MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 98 of 101

Welcome to A Derby Hat Countdown featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®!

Our featured hat for Day 4 is the stunning “Regina’s Corinne” extra wide brim design found in Salon 2 of the Derby Hat Collection

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-98Hats

A wonderful lady named Regina contacted me last year for a custom Derby hat design. It was Regina’s first Derby adventure and her husband had given her a Derby hat with custom design consultation as a gift. Regina told me that she had fallen in love with my original “Corinne” hat…which has been a favorite among my customers for both the Derby and Royal Ascot as well as fancy teas and weddings.

Blog-CorinneDer161-001B

Regina found a coral dress that she liked and wondered if I could add a splash of coral tones to the Corinne. The result was a luscious new Corinne design kicked up a notch and trimmed with a vibrant coral organza Marguerite, matching satin sash, tulle and buttons. When Regina received her hat, she said that it made her feel “like royalty”!

Blog-ReginasCorinneDer161-002G

Like Regina, the Corinne style is one of my favorites. Every Derby season I receive requests for custom recreations of Derby hat classics here at MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®.

I wonder what someone will envision for the next custom version of this amazing chapeau… I guess we’ll all have to wait and see!

For more views and details about the Regina’s Corinne Der161-002 chapeau shown above, please visit the Regina’s Corinne webpage.

You’ll also find many other wide brim hats at my KY Derby Hat Collection. And if you’re looking for a smaller brim, perhaps even a fascinator, you’ll enjoy browsing all four Derby hat salons that offer just about every Derby hat style imaginable!

Thank you for visiting us here at Hats and Horses for Day 4 of our Derby Hat Countdown.

Only 97 hats to go ’til the call to the post and the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby!

MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® Derby Hat Countdown – 100 of 101

Welcome to Day 2 of A Derby Hat Countdown featuring 101 Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®. We began our countdown yesterday with the “Sedona” chapeau and we are looking forward to inspiring you all the way to the Derby, one day and one HAT at a time!

And now we present our second hat in the Derby Hat Countdown… the “Kristy”…

Blog-DerbyHatCountdownPoster-100Hats

The “Kristy” hat was created as a custom design for Kristy Deyeso of New York, New York. Kristy and her husband John are devoted horse racing fans and Kristy needed a very special design for the Kentucky Oaks races to match her dress.

The result was this multi-layered chapeau in white dupioni silk with two white silk organza wavy brim layers. I trimmed the front of the hat with a single hot pink taffeta rose curl to pull the hat to the dress and then framed it with black satin leaves and a double bow created out of black silk organza lined with hot pink taffeta.

Blog-DerbyHatCTDown-KristyDer175-001D

To pull it all together I added a layer of black chenille ball hat veiling to cover the wavy organza brim layers and finally, a black satin sash to complete the look.

For more views and all the yummy details about the “Kristy” chapeau, please visit the Kristy hat webpage.

Please visit my KY Derby Hat Collection at the MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® website where we are offering four unique Derby salons with hats arranged according to size: extra wide brims, wide brims, medium brims and small brims/fascinators. There’s always something new to see when it’s Derby time!

Thank you for visiting us here at Hats and Horses for Day 2 of our Derby Hat Countdown. 99 hats to go!
